The Bwiti Tradition

My most important experience with plant medicine came when I ate the root bark of an unassuming West African shrub called Iboga. The people who maintain a traditional use of the plant are called the Bwiti. In 2023 I traveled to Gabon and performed a Bwiti initiation ceremony. Part of the ceremony involved peering into a mirror. The visions I saw helped reveal my inner strength and connect me to my ancestors. There is a part of me that still thinks that sounds far-fetched, but it’s true. It happened.

Dimessa, the Nganga (or shaman) pictured here, helped me interpret those visions, and as a result of what I saw, he told me that my Bwiti name is Moubenghui. He didn’t bestow this name on me. He helped me to see that this bold, strong, and fearless part of me, Moubenghui, had been in there the whole time. I didn’t need to eat Iboga for this to be true. It was always true. Plant medicine didn’t light the fire inside me. It was there the whole time, I just needed some help to see it. But I see it now, and I want to share it. So whether you have experience with plant medicine or not, I can help you interpret your visions for your life. The difference between the type of vision one has on plant medicine and the more conventional use of the term is only a matter of degrees. Finding the fire inside is something that we can all do. And if you work with me, we will tend it together, and then use it to help light the path of change in your life.

Sharing is an important part of the Bwiti tradition. You share with me your vision-for-change in your life, and I will share with you my interpretation of how best to realize it. There is a fire in you too. Tending it works best when you have help. The Bwiti don’t do anything alone. That’s partly out of necessity. But it’s also a practice embedded in the culture of the people. The type of connection that this coaching offers is one that reflects that deep truth. As humans, we need each other. And I am an open-minded, patient, and gentle listener.

As a coach, I offer a warm, supportive space where you can:

Tools for Integration

Each person’s path is unique, and part of the work is discovering what feels most natural and supportive for you. Here are some of the practices we might explore together:

Journaling & Creative Expression

We must talk to ourselves. Journaling is the most direct way. But it's not the only way. Singing, drawing, dancing, or whatever creative outlet you like is a way to do this too.

Ritual & Intention

Rituals are a very important and centering activity. I have a number that I practice, some learned, some invented, but all with some connection to the elemental or the cosmic. We will talk of this a lot.

Conversation & Storytelling

Manifesting our desires instead of manifesting our fears starts with giving voice to both. One must talk in order to realize change.

Nature Connection

Nature is all around us. You don't have to live somewhere beautiful to connect with nature. Libreville Gabon is a big grimy city, and yet that is where Iboga lives. We will discuss touching grass, much grass.

Practical Life Shifts

Change doesn't have to be big. The most important change is a change of perspective. Seeing the fire inside.

Mindfulness & Presence

We all move must move at a pace that is comfortable for us. Not a pace imposed upon us. This is the most mindful thing one can do. Walking at a plant's pace.

Listening to the Body

Our parts live in our nervous system. When we get to know ourselves better we don't just get to know our mind, we get to know our whole being: Body, Mind, and Spirit.

In our work together, I’ll help you explore which of these tools feel most supportive for you. The goal is to find simple, meaningful ways to weave your insights into daily life—so that your journey continues to unfold with clarity, balance, and purpose.

Psychedelic Integration

might be for you if…

You’re interested in trying something different.

You’ve tried running from the past, whether through substances, behaviors, or processes, but you want to stop running.

You’ve imagined what making radical changes in your life could look like, but you could use help making your visions real.

You want to increase the odds that your experience with plant medicine will produce the life-changing results you desire.

You’re interested in unburdening feelings of guilt related to your past acts or those of your ancestors.

You want your own healing to serve as a model of success for your family and friends.

You aren’t sure why… It just feels like something you’re meant to do.

Why this?

Whether creating a vision of the future, or healing pain from the past, it’s good to have someone skilled at interpretation to help make things a little more clear.

The insights provided by an experience with plant medicine are worth reflecting on with another person, especially someone with their own experiences to draw upon. Like the plants, we’re social beings, so sharing helps us grow. Through focused interpretive conversation, goal setting & achieving, and healing parts work we can nourish the roots and sprout new leaves at the same time.
